Oral Yeast Infection
A yeast infection of the mouth, referred to as thrush, is caused by an overgrowth of the naturally occurring and commonly found Candida yeasts. The yeasts usually do not cause any problems, as they are kept in check by certain microorganisms in the body and the body's immune system. A weakened immune system and a warm, moist environment such as the mouth is ideal for Candida yeast growth. As children and the elderly have a weaker immune system, they are particularily susceptible. Some of the symptoms of an oral yeast infection are:
- A creamy, light colored coating on the tongue or throat
- Red patches on the tongue
- Red cracks in the corners of the mouth
- Burning or painful sensation in the mouth
